| In the mid-1950's, the national church
suggested a reorganization of Presbyterian women, fearing that some
societies might become cliques, and the idea of a Women's Association, to
which all female church members automatically belonged, was born. The
implementation of this system in Meadville was one of the first changes made
by the Rev. William A. Smith when he came to Meadville, and the Meadville
Women's Association was formally inaugurated on January 23, 1957. There
have generally been eight circles, meeting in either the afternoon or
evening once each month for prayer and study, together with an annual
Women's Dinner in the fall, and Christmas program in December. (from
